What lies beyond matric for Spirit Scholars

Published by Spirit News on December 11, 2025

You’ve written Matric 2025, so now what? Well, the first piece of advice is to “chill” in the vernacular of matriculants. For some this entails heading off to Plett Rage, and while this may be good for blowing off steam, ‘raging’ would seem to be the antithesis of chilling? For others, chilling is a camping trip into the bush or days at the beach. For others, post-matric is a chance to earn some much-needed holiday money.

For Spirit Education matriculants of 2025, the anxious wait for results has just begun and the clock is ticking towards mid-January 2026, when our scholars log in, and in one sense, see their future unfold before their very eyes! But what lies beyond Matric for Spirit Scholars?

Of course, the overarching focus for Spirit Scholars is achieving academic success and our track record over the past decades demonstrates that our scholarship programme produces academic excellence. This is underpinned by a rigorous process of scholar application and approval, not just on academic merit and needs testing, but a host of other factors which count towards acceptance.

But acceptance is only the start of the programme. Our partner schools are selected on specific criteria, but most importantly, are chosen on the basis of being able to deliver not only curriculum and teaching excellence but also providing our scholars with a rounded educational experience in a safe and nurturing environment. And for that, we would like to thank and pay tribute to the principals, deputy principals, teaching and support staff at all our partner schools. You are truly heroic and help shape the lives of our scholars for a lifetime ahead.

A Spirit Scholarship also embraces ongoing monitoring and mentoring at school to help ensure that not only is talent identified and nurtured, but it also allows us to identify areas of concern early on and provide appropriate support timeously when required. Our scholars all come from disadvantaged backgrounds and from underserved communities and thus, many of the issues and problems encountered have less to do with schools and much more to do with extracurricular issues.

With crime rates on the Cape Flats being some of the highest in the world, we are acutely aware of the anxiety and tensions faced by some Spirit Scholars, not to mention transport and affordability challenges. Some scholars are forced to take three modes of transport simply to get to and from school and often in the cold, wet and dark of the Cape winter.

So, fundamental to the Spirit Scholarship is our emphasis on identifying, growing and nurturing life skills in our scholars. This can include social awareness programmes and developing self-identity, peer engagement and mutual support and coping skills.

But the highlight of the year for us (and we hope for our Spirit Scholars) is our annual camp during which time we all go away together for a few nights and spend our days growing, identifying, sharing, laughing, exercising, playing and engaging in team work such that by the end of the week-end, every Spirit Scholar has become part of a broader family. These are bonds that tie us together through Matric and beyond into our Spirit Alumni programme.

So, while like all other Grade 12 students Spirit Matriculants are eagerly awaiting their results and launching the next step of their life’s journey, they bring with them a rich tapestry and repertoire of skills, experiences, values and qualities that make them stand out young South Africans. Their future is bright, very bright.

Good luck 2025 Matrics!
