Nurturing Potential – The Spirit Foundation application journey

Published by Spirit News on August 1, 2025

Every year, the Spirit Foundation Education Programme (SFEP) extends a vital invitation to Grade 6 learners across Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. The message is clear: step into a future built on academic excellence, personal growth, and community support. Guided by a diligent and rigorous yet caring selection process, SFEP opens its doors to those with promise and potential.

“Applications open in September and close at the end of October,” says Courtney Pienaar, General Manager of the Spirit Foundation Education Programmes. “Every year, we receive around 400 applications. Once submitted online, these entries mark the beginning of a multi-stage journey.”

In the first quarter of the following year, approximately 80–100 applicants are invited to academic testing. “It’s a significant narrowing of the field,” Pienaar explains, “but it allows us to focus on those who show both academic potential and a depth of character.”

The journey continues with group and family interviews. Through these conversations, the Spirit Foundation seeks to understand not only academic ability but also determination, family values, and the learner’s readiness to do well in a supportive environment.

“We’re not just looking at marks. We’re looking for values, resilience, and readiness. These kinds of qualities indicate that a scholar will truly benefit from this long‑term opportunity.”

Ultimately, twenty scholars are selected each year. They join a bridging programme in the latter half of Grade 7, equipped with academic preparation and emotional readiness, before transitioning into a top-tier partner high school.

For Pienaar and the team, the most powerful moments come during acceptance calls. “You hear the gratitude and it reminds us of how life‑changing this opportunity can be.”
