High Africa adventure for the Spirit Foundation scholars

Published by Spirit News on April 8, 2026

Some recipes just work, like this year’s Spirit Foundation camp. The camp provides a unique environment for our scholars to develop essential life skills away from the traditional classroom or home setting.

From 28–30 March, Spirit Foundation hosted its annual camp at High Africa Adventure Camp in Worcester, bringing together scholars, Spirit Foundation staff and alumni for a weekend focused on connection, growth and community. Guided by the theme “Milestones to Mastery,” the camp programme encouraged independence, relationship-building, communication, building a sense of belonging and the development of new skills.

Scholars learnt how to interact with new peers and mentors, learnt how to collaborate, communicate effectively and build friendships in a safe, supportive and convivial community setting. Independence and self-confidence were nurtured by scholars stepping out of their comfort zone, especially in overnight programmes, which built self-reliance and the confidence to handle new challenges without parental intervention.

Equally important was emotional growth. In the supportive camp environment, scholars learnt to better understand social diversity, process emotions like frustration or homesickness, thereby developing social emotional skills and emotional regulation.

Camp also provided a wonderful opportunity for structured and unstructured play and creativity. Importantly, camp provided a break from digital screens, offering free time for imaginative play, which fostered critical thinking and creativity. Scholars were also introduced to new activities to help them discover personal interests and talents.

Amidst all this, there were opportunities for leadership training preparing them for real-world responsibilities and later life.

With seven Spirit Foundation staff members and ten alumni volunteers in attendance, camp placed a strong emphasis on integrating the new Grade 8 cohort and strengthening relationships across all grades. Alumni played a key role as mentors and role models, supporting scholars and contributing to a safe, engaging environment.

A highlight of the weekend was the 12-metre high ropes course, where scholars were challenged to step outside their comfort zones, building resilience, confidence, communication and trust in themselves and their peers. The camp also included a vibrant evening of creativity, with a fashion and talent show that encouraged teamwork, self-expression and fun!

Camp 2026 once again demonstrated the strength of the Spirit Foundation community, leaving scholars with a deeper sense of connection and confidence as they continue their journey towards mastery.

We look forward to 2027!
